Autism: The Musical

Last week, I was lucky enough to speak to Perrin Chiles, he is a fellow UVA alumni that is producing films in L.A. His first documentary, “Autism: The Music.” premiered at the TriBeCa film festival. HBO purchased the film for mid-six figures and it was selected to the 2008 Academy Awards Short List for Best Documentary Feature.
Perrin is a great guy and easy to talk with. We discussed everything from how he got started in film, how he raised capital, to how he got into the major film festivals. Interestingly enough, his film was shot in on regular Digital Video, and later upgraded to HD. He said, as for the quality of the film, “it looked beautiful.” This goes to show that digital film is changing the independent film industry in a good way. His company, Ineffect Films, is off to a great start. Another strong note from the conversation was Perrin’s comment about film festivals, “Now in-days, the festivals are so political.” This proves the point that a solid self-distribution plan is ever more important in the industry.
