Casting Director in Cville?!?

Posted by admin on January 31st, 2009 filed in Personal

Who knew?!? Last week I had the pleasure of meeting Erica Arvold, an experienced casting director. As I continue to network and reach out to this community I discover more and more talented and experienced people in Charlottesville. It was great to meet Erica Arvold and she had some great advice and some good insight in terms of screenwriting, casting, and producing.

All this time I have been living in Charlottesville (my entire life) and have been relatively unfamiliar of a great resource here, specifically, CHAOS (Charlottesville & Albemarle Organization of Screenwriters), which meets on the first Tuesday of every month, however, to join you must be invited. Another big thing that sticks out in my mind from my conversation with Erica Arvold is that people only read scripts once, in other words, make sure that when you hand over your script, its perfect, you only get one shot!

I’m also currently reading a book Erica Arvold recommended, Roger Corman’s, “How I made a Hundred Movies in Hollywood and Never Lost a Dime.”

Hi. I had the pleasure of working with Erica Arvold on the Film”desperate but not serious” in which I played the role of Justin. I was actually looking for her email contact when I ran across this page. Would you have that info?
    Thank you. zach tiegen

    Dear Sirs,

My name is Melissa Breuer, I´m from Germany and I´m 22 years old.
I visted a private acting school in Germany. In my opinion it wasn´t a good school, and now I want to learn on the Strasberg Institute in Los Angeles (for one year).
In fact of that I did before, I will be 24 years old when I finished he school in Los Angeles. I don´t have any film experience.
Here comes my question: Is there a real hope, that I can go to castings and get a lead for a film?
Or think the casting directors and regisseures directly: “Oh, the woman has never played in a movie, so we can not use her.” ?
How do I get dates for castings? Do I need a manager or agent? I can not pay him when I came straight from school. I need to get an offer of a role while I’m still in training, so I get another visa.
I hope you can help me.

    Best regards,

    Melissa

I think the best way is to start being an extra in film/tv shows and then just keep networking and putting your headshots out there to casting directors. In my opinion, without a “reel” and some experience it will be hard for you to be cast as a lead.

    Hope that helps.
